LGBTQIA+ Rights

Right now, out of the 63 legislators representing Nevada, 2 are openly LGBTQ. I am fighting to join them as the third, as well as the first non-binary representative in the legislature’s history. I take all attacks on the LGBTQ+ community personally, and that’s why I like to emphasize with voters the importance of primary elections. We can’t just elect Democrats, we have to elect the RIGHT Democrats for the job. We have seen too many Democrats nationwide throw Trans people under the bus. I vow to be a champion for Queer and trans rights because none of us are free until we are all free, no exceptions.

Policy Priorities

  • Passing a Trans Healthcare Shield Law - We need to protect Trans people, their families, and their providers from attacks here and from out-of-state.

    • From the 83rd Legislative Session →SB 171: This bill, sponsored by Senator Ohrenschall, would create a Trans Healthcare shield law for the state of Nevada. This was vetoed by the Governor, but we can bring it back!

  • Ensuring Access for HIV prevention drugs - Because of generations of work and activism, we have reached a point where HIV is no longer a death sentence. However, the work continues as we ensure that we get every queer person the access to medical care that they need, especially under a federal administration that is actively pulling back on its HIV policy advocacy).

  • Make insurance cover fertility preservation and treatment - This is important for everyone impacted, including the LGBTQ community whose family planning often has to be much more intentional than their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts.

    • From the 83rd Legislative Session →SB 217: This bill, sponsored by Senator Canizarro, would protect infertility treatment and fertility preservation treatment and mandate coverage. Governor Lombardo vetoed this bill, and it should be a priority to bring this bill back.

  • Passing inclusive and comprehensive Sex-Ed Standards - Sex Ed isn’t about indoctrination or encouraging students to have sex. It’s about knowledge, safety, and preventing public health crises. As a queer student in Nevada, I was required to learn about HIV but not about HIV prevention drugs and how to access them. My orientation was explicitly banned from the classroom, and my preparation for adult life was hindered because of that. Many can say the same about the statewide health standards lacking topics like intimate partner violence or online grooming prevention. We need a curriculum that serves students, not political agendas.

  • From the 83rd Legislative Session →SB 141: This bill, sponsored by Senator Scheible, would require  jails and detention facilities to develop policies ensuring respectful treatment, housing, and medical care for transgender and gender diverse prisoners. It was vetoed by Governor Lombardo, but we can and should bring it back.
